Why Chicken Wire Art?

How does an artist choose what they are going to present to the public? The show can be based on history, creative impulse, detached meanings, or even thematic appeals. This choice is not an easy one. After working in the art field through out my bachelors and teaching art for the past seven years I never found one niche that I like enough to hold my concentration.
My art developed more out of laughter and a creative impulse than anything predetermined. Working in traditional two-dimensional mediums my art was less then impressive. They were more replicas that lacked the “wow” factor. Up until one dinner in which my husband, a six-foot five cowboy, made a more then aggressive statement at the dinner table. This statement was simple and it ignited my imagination. “What’s with the chicken?”
The spark took me directly to the workshop, searching for chicken anything, and wire was the first thing that I got my hands on. I wanted to make the iconic symbol for a cowboy, his saddle. I could have never foreseen the pain and monotony that I was taking on in the creative process.
The best part of finding a unique niche is that it leaves a “wow” impression on people.  What is the “wow” impression? People asking how, why, and their eyes looking again and again never finding satisfaction, just amazement.  When an artist finds something that truly does what they are meaning, there is a sense of accomplishment and an adrenaline rush for the creative process.

Thank you!!!

Thank you to all of those who attended. What an amazing turn out.

What a Hit!

The gallery show was amazing! What an experience. I loved watching people check out the art! Listen to their comments, and it was a little ego boost when people had to wait to get to the pieces cause the place was packed elbow to elbow.

Belief

No day is ever complete on the range with out thanking the Good Lord for the Land and the beauty. The cross is religion, symbols, and so much more. If anything its sign of comfort.  The four corners north, south, east and west: the knowledge that one must always keep to survive.

This piece is a little different from the others and expressive in its own way.  The nails bringing to life each new day of the suns rays. Barbwire captures the water that flows from the top of the mountains down into the valleys. The heart of the center, open and free.

The Legend of the West

It's amazing to think back and remember that the West was once a land with no fences and larger then life animals roaming free. The bison have always held their place as a symbolic icon of the West.  In Texas they are long horns, which I was very tempted to make, but again I wanted to keep my art close to home. Here I brought to life the bison. Every vain holds the barbwire that separated the land.

Can't wait

Just 16 days until the gallery opening!!! Please feel free to join us for great art, food and music. Cowboys welcome :)

Cowboy Necessities

A few necessities that a cowboy can't forget when moving cows.

Dealing with the brush of the low mountains would shred a pair of jeans in a day, or even in a morning. Layering the legs with leather can lead to a very hot day, but I wouldn't go with out. I have shredded a shirt or two and have a nice scare across my ribs as a reminder, no way would I leave my legs in that danger.

Then there are the spurs, a key to moving your horse in after those hard to get at cows, or when a day becomes to long and you both want to be at the watering hole and you haven't even reached your destination.  I will never forget the first time spurs became a reality for me. It was with dear old Malon, he would have never reached our destination if I didn't persuade him. Some how he never needs persuasion for the ride home.

And no cowboy would ever survive with out protection from the sun and elements. The hat, an iconic treasure that is more necessity then looks. In torrential down poor your able to protect your self. Scolding sun you hide under it as if it was a cave. And once in a while you duck behind the rim as your horse plows through the trees. Its amazing how a cowboys hat resembles the life of a cowboy.

The spurs jingle, the hat fits and the chaps fold like old leather craving oil.
